Re-issue of this classic 1988 release, originally released as a limited LP (Misty Circles, Ltd 1000). "...a proper re-release courtesy of the folks at Hau Ruck SPQR, and well done it is, it has been cleaned up and remastered without losing any of the original integrity... One can say many things about Ain Soph, but one thing is certain; they know how to incorporate different styles of music to their best advantage. For the most part, this release comes across as a ritual for the first free tracks at least. Which on the original vinyl release found closure with 'IAO', then takes a more aggressive tone on the title track 'Kshatriya', which is more a battle cry than an actual song, a post-industrial piece that is discordant as well as melodic. Not short on the esoteric this release finds Ain Soph on the cusp of re-invention, for in the early nineties their sound took a slightly different turn that can be described as folk rock, but we will always have this little gem to remember them" (Heathen Harvest). ALIO DIE & MATHIAS GRASSOW - 'Praha Meditations' CD (Hic Sunt Leones)
After a concert in Prague in 2009, these artists spontaneously played acoustic instruments in a stone circle on top of a hill in Troja. Inspired by the special surroundings and the springtime, zithers, tubes, bells, rattles, shells and flutes were used. The recordings were edited in studio by Alio Die, then Mathias Grassow added electronic drones to expand the point of view and enrich the flow and layers of the compositions. The resultant eight tracks show how mostly static and repetitive balanced sounds can interact with our perception during listening, bringing us into an active and intimate quiet mood, softly absorbing us into a dream-like and time-opening experience. 6-panel digipak.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS - 'Caeduceus & Black Sal' LP (Memoirs Of An Aesthete)
The latest in Ashtray Navigations' the ongoing vinylization of their out-of-print catalogue. This amped-up mindbender was originally released in 2007. One side features a thick dinner of swirling tambouras, electric sitars and synths blasting out of tiny battery amp speakers wrapped in buzzing tinfoil (a description of the methodology here and not just the sound). One side of clubfooted samba rhythms and twin guitar sustain overload which offers a key as to why Ashtray Navigations' set at All Tomorrow's Parties a few years ago was roundly condemned as "Santana" in certain circles. CIRCLE - 'Rautatie' CD (Ektro Records)
Circle is ever changing, ever Circular. On "Rautatie" the Finnish six-piece once again dives into uncharted waters of music, into a miasma of influences that feels vaguely familiar but, in an uncanny way, is not quite real. "Rautatie" is epic hard rock and colossal riffs that corrode into fragments of black metallic atonality over time. Occasionally the album’s majestic elements step aside and let sprinkles of athletic boogie take the center stage. Together the eight tracks on the album form a hard rocking bullet train, speeding ever onwards on a circular railroad to infinity.

This titillating live spectacle of Circle was multitracked at the reputed rock venue The Croft, Bristol, during their UK tour in autumn 2011. CIRCLE - 'Tulikoira' CD (Ektro Records)
The mysterious acronym "NWOFHM" was revealed to the world for the first time in 2005 when this mysterious sequence of letters dominated the centerfold of the booklet of Tulikoira, a studio album by prolific Finnish krautrock band Circle. It is likely that the meaning of NWOFHM was initially nonsensical to most of Circle's listeners, but some of them may have been able to dig up the phrase "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" from the nethermost recesses of their helmets, and to deduct that this variation probably referred to a localised Finnish version of this 80's phenomenon - only over twenty years too late. 2009 edition with slipcase.

DER TOD & DAS MADCHEN - 'D-Moll' CD (Lichterklang)
Der Tod & Das Mädchen started out in 2009. Their debut album "d-Moll“ is a musical anthology of long forgotten lyricists, harking back to the death of Goethe. The elegies, all evolving from the 19th century, reveal the sadness and the pain of the loss of close relatives. Melancholy and transience, deathwish and madness, dream and reality crystallise themselves out of these thoughts and build the centre of "d-Moll“. Inspired by componists of the romantic times, the extict poetry is mainly based on the dark and melancholic tunes of a piano. The closing words by the German imperator Wilhelm II. from 1904 build the end of the album, questioning the human arrogance with his words "the world is so big and we are so small, how come that we expect to circle everything around us?". LYCIA - 'The Burning Circle And Then Dust' CD (Silber Records)
The classic Ethereal / Darkwave album from 1995, stunningly remastered and released as the definitive version, as intended by Lycia frontman Mike VanPortFleet. "The Burning Circle..." was a groundbreaking point in Lycia's career. It marked a shift from more atmospheric music towards song-oriented tracks and the addition of David Galas' bass / synth and Tara Vanflower's seductive vocals. An hour of stunning music, reminiscent of early Cocteau Twins.
This is the first full album from Lithuanian industrial / ambient project Maldur Atai. This hour long album emanates a strong and solid atmosphere that grows, develops and changes during each exquisitely constructed track. All are related to violence in religion and religion as an arcane or masked violator acting in informational reality. This album reveals religion as a system marketed and propagated by invisible conspirators. Checkpoint is a filtration camp where children's souls are met by elitist creatures of the arcane society wearing black mantles and hiding their faces. They lie, they enslave, they manipulate and they involve you in the vicious circle with almost no hope of retreat. Checkpoint is an abstract, universal and purified vision of Maldur Atai in which many will recognise their own very personal experiences and the symbols of the everyday secret war. MAURIZIO BIANCHI - 'Ludium' CD (Silentes Minimal Editions)
A long and almost solemn track built with reverberated piano notes, a slow and rhythmical flow leaned on a background made of clashing hisses and vague, distant, rustling ambient noises. A brief interval based on obscure drones moving in circles, inexorably entangled on themselves. Then another long piano-based track, this time more dilated, confused, ethereal and prim, so much that it takes the distinguishing features of an indecipherable sonic mass, abstract and booming, estranging, deep and psychedelic. A few and minimal elements, “directed” in a masterly fashion and assembled in an absolutely fundamental work, from the brightest mind of the Italian experimental scene and of all the music “without compromise” of the last thirty years.

PHASE II - 'Afterglow' CD (Ahnstern)
It has been a little over 32 since the inception and all-too-brief life span of Phase II, the prog-folk band founded by Mark Andrews (Blue Grass) and Nicholas Tesluk (Changes). "Afterglow" introduces modern listeners to Phase II's unique and timeless mixture of varied musical styles. Included in this expansive release are 6 songs from their original repertoire, all recorded here for the very first time. As a special reprise, all songs from their only release (a long out of print 7" blue vinyl) have been enhanced and included on the album. To bring things full-circle, Phase II is also proud to present a recording of its first all-new song of the 21st century on this CD. The 69 minute album concludes with "Candle in the Night", their complete pre-progressive, conceptual radio program from 1978. Digipak with booklet featuring full lyrics, as well as an anecdotal history of the band in text and photos.
A tasteful combination of improvised thrash noise / metal by Pymathon (Topias Tiheäsalo and Jaakko Tolvi - the former known for his collaboration with RLW and solo CD, the latter for banging drums in Rauhan Orkesteri) and harsh noise-driven free jazz (not dissimilar to Merzbow in places) by Gentle Evil (Janne Tuomi and Tommi Keränen - the former known for a solo CD and percussion for Circle, the latter for being the other half of Testicle Hazard). Three tracks from Pymathon and a single, long track from Gentle Evil. "Both kick ass, crush skulls and are loud enough to demolish buildings". A solid improv guitar rant for those of a sturdy disposition! Finnish import.
"What if Z’EV had written the intro to Darkthrone’s “Blaze In The Northern Sky?". With that question in mind Finland’s Rakhim unearth "Crimson Umbrella"; a two-track fit of kraut-noise psychosis, schizophrenic percussive clatter and layers of effects and over-processed vocal chants and screams. The nightmarish deconstruction of the 2 lengthy tracks bare only trace elements of main members Krypt and Rudimentor’s day jobs in Circle and Pharaoh Overlord, with Rakhim indulging in sonic terror too far gone for the aforementioned bands. Although the album’s title makes reference to L.A.’s great Jesters Of Destiny, Rakhim would more aptly call to mind Wolf Eyes filtered through a lengthy Faust tape jam. Best experienced through headphones at appropriately ear-bleeding volume. Silver on black digifile.
RAPOON - 'Dream Circle' CD (Ewers Tonkunst / Indiestate Distribution)
Re-issue of one of the most influential ambient albums of the early 90s, Rapoon's very first album, "Dream Circle" (Death of Vinyl). It is both a transitional and a ground-breaking work, but has not aged a whit in the nearly twenty years since it first saw the light of day. SLOGUN - 'We Human Animal' CD (Circle Of Shit)
A welcome release of brand new material from Slogun, and what a beast it is. "We Human Animal" is a scathing attack on humanity, delivered with precise, focused energy and contempt. Musically, this is a darker release, with a more restrained approach. But let's get this straight, that's strictly in comparison to some of John's other works. In reality, this is incredibly intense and sonically violent - swirling textured distortion and turbine charged electronics, with screamed, in your face vocals delivered in the classic Slogun style. Still, there's more variation here than a lot of previous works, with claustrophobically atmospheric, layered passages that make for a very complete release. THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part I: Swirling Lands Of Disquiet And Catharsis' CD (Ahnstern / Steinklang)
The Joy of Nature is a project from the Azores (a group of 9 islands between Europe and North America, belonging to Portugal). Musically, "The Joy of Nature" is like a serpent - always renewing itself, never resting in one shape, changing form but keeping the same essence. 'Swirling Lands of Disquiet and Catharsis' is the first part of a trilogy entitled 'The Empty Circle'. This first part corresponds to Nigredo. This album is about a world of disquiet, in which a catharsis should be done. To gather the impurities, realise their nature and build something pure from there. The music follows the concept - there are elements of Folk, Ambient, Psychedelic and Experimental music, mixed in a coherent way, creating a unique sound and a breathtaking atmosphere, predominantly acoustic and with dark tones.
THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part II: Rastos De Sangue E Fragmentos Da Tradicao' CD (Ahnstern)
The second part of the trilogy "The Empty Circle" by The Joy of Nature reflects and gathers fragments of the Perennial Tradition. Naturally, it is also about the Spiritual inheritance of the Portuguese ancestors. Musically, it's the most song-orientated The Joy of Nature release until now, with its roots in the folk tradition of rural Portuguese regions, especially the Azores. The album is not just a Folk-album, it also has several amazing psychedelic moments. Features collaborations with R. Coutinho, B. Ardo (Sangre Cavallum), Rui Almeida (Massa Última), Triarca, Mara Neves and M.J. Over an hour of music.
THE JOY OF NATURE - 'The Empty Circle Part III: Anitya' CD (War Office Propaganda / Rage In Eden)
Anitya is that which has no existence in the beginning and no existence in the end. Its nature is impermanence. The record was created in two different and very special periods of time and it musically unites both western and eastern sounds. The tracks contained are the musical expression of different kinds of dreams. It consists of folk, experimental, psychedelic and industrial elements and even classical music but sounding, in various places, like ritual music. The structures of the tracks owe as much to classical as to psychedelic music. Digipak.

VOIDWORK - 'Horror/Forsaken' CD (Black Drone)
A beautiful release by VoidWork featuring vocals from Ann-Mari Thim (Arcana, Seventh Harmonic). "Horror/Forsaken" is a double-headed album based loosely on the concepts of fear, abandonment and mankind's meaningless place in an impersonal Universe. "Horror", the first half of the release, is relatively song oriented and was inspired musically by 90s darkwave, as well as traditional melodies of both Eastern and Western culture. "Forsaken" mainly carries traditional dark ambient influences and focuses on atmosphere rather than on conventional song structure or sound. Both dark halves come together to make a black whole that is organic in its origin and purpose. From waking to sleep, birth to death. Ltd x 300 copies in a digipak. Australian import.
Vresnit is solo project of the man behind the Kerpg label. A vibrating flow of crudely woven Shamanic Drone Ambient atmospheres. "Tunvet" appears as a primitive experience for co-breathing with Earth, diving into the twilight forest and flowing into its beyond. Slow and endless movement in a Circle that appears as Eternal Order. A Myth of the World-Man Creation, a dreamflight, a meeting with the Forest Spirits preying on the flesh and substituting it with metal and stones, giving life to the Ancient Co-knowledge. Created using field recordings, voices and woodwinds, metal gongs, percussion and "concrete" sounds. Gripping, saturating and transforming experience of raw wind, celestial chariots and chthonic naturalism. Ltd x 484 copies in a 6-panel digisleeve.
WHISPER ROOM - 'Birch White' CD (Elevation Recordings)
Whisper Room is a trio based in Toronto, Canada and Berlin, Germany featuring Aidan Baker (Nadja), Neil Wiernik (NAW) and Jakob Thiesen (Students). These three creative minds had moved in similar musical circles in Toronto and Montreal for years sporadically sharing stages but did not actively come together to play as a trio until Dec 2006. Since then they have worked as a improv unit and combined their disparate musical backgrounds to create music which explores the conjunction of electronic rhythms and textures with the pulsations and psychedelics and shoegaze and krautrock music. Ltd x 2000 copies in a digipak.
