DAO & COH - 'Dzerzhinsk-9' LP (Tourette)
Russia has had an incredibly interesting and mostly uncredited underground electronic scene for some time. One of its flag bearers has been Ivan Pavlov (CoH). He has collaborated with Throbbing Gristle members Cosey Fanny Tutti and Peter Christopherson (as Soi Song). The LP is culled from 1996 recordings which were made with DAO (Andrej Dao Kolesov). DAO + CoH uses bass, guitars and custom ZX Spectrum and the results are pretty damn awesome. There is a distinct 90‘s flavour and yet it retains a freshness. ‘Propharadeia’ is a really driving track that makes me shake my body from finger to toe. ‘Oka’ is dark and sinister coming through like an Autechre / Muslimgauze hybrid, seething with eastern paranoia. ‘Sung In Sand' continues the eastern flavour with its building intricate yet subtle percussion and swooping synths. Flatlands (with 2 tracks) are seriously heavy in a stripped-down Isis style, with monolithic, catchy riffs crashing into each other and plenty of screaming. Sunshine Republic (with 1 long track) are on a more experimental tip, reminiscent of House Of Low Culture, though there are elements of doom, post-rock and noise in the mix too. The LP is limited to 330 copies and is presented on heavy grey vinyl and comes with acetate inserts. Offensive and difficult in equal measure.

ION - 'Immaculada' CD (Equilibrium Music)
A collection of slow motion mysterious ballads, balancing light and shade, salvation and loss, matching Irish landscapes and Mediterranean sunbathed seashores with its haunting Celtic vibes that thrive and build upon tribal rhythmic patterns. Much like its 2006 predecessor "Madre, Protégenos", the straightforward and minimalistic overall tone of the album is misleading, as its layered complexity and resonant harmonies reveal themselves at each listen, one mystery at a time, and one step closer to the end of this spiritual quest. Mostly recorded in the Portuguese countryside and in Dublin city, the intricate instrumental backbone is mainly constructed out of traditional instruments. With the mandolin family taking center stage, the tracks have been arranged to incorporate ethnic instrumentation (flutes, uillean pipes) which contrast with the sparse orchestration supplied by cello, violin, acoustic guitars, keyboard pads and piano, supported by the earthbound pulse of the percussion. Official re-issue of the ultra rare 2005 Sub Pop release (Ltd x 100 copies), now in a digipak. This album is dedicated to Giovanni Paneroni, amateur astronomer and misunderstood genius. "A new astronomy" is probably the most eccentric and out-there JG release to date. Recorded mostly in Marco Fasolo's bedroom on a 4-track cassette machine, the album was conceived as the imaginary soundtrack for some of their most bizarre, vivid dreams - obviously interspersed by the occasional nightmare. It's made by grainy, hallucinated musical scores trying to depict the beautiful, the scary, the annoying and the simply absurd inhabiting dreams. It runs the gamut from ghostly ambient drones to brain-damaged acoustic sketches, covering everything in between - furious guitar freak-outs and a homage to British 60's producer Joe Meek included.

The bodies of two teenage girls were discovered on Sunday, July 29, 1973 on a dirt road near Coquille, OR. Both were nude and each girl shot once in the chest. The weapon used in the killings was a .22 cal rifle. The teenagers had been on a hiking and camping trip in LaVerne Park when the two met Roger Lynn Green who would later kill the two girls without provocation in a sudden and spontaneous act of violence. "Verdigris" was released on the 37th anniversary of the murders as a commemoration of sorts. The focus of this record is on the two victims Kathleen Marie Bechtel & Vicki Louise Fawcett. Originally intended to be a re-issue of Wolfskin's 2001 limited release "The Gather of Shadows by the Setting Sun" (Ajna), this eventually evolved into a re-working of three tracks from that release, complimented by 7 newly recorded tracks. As the Wolfskin era comes to end, this release represents a glimpse into their past… a more organic, flowing ambient record than what you may find today. That being said, it most certainly will go down as one of their more stunning, darker visions; a masterpiece of shadowy atmospheres and drifting currents, featuring multiple layers of archaic sounds, nebulous textures and ritual invocations, perfectly combined to form a release of intense depth and complexity.
