DAO & COH - 'Dzerzhinsk-9' LP (Tourette)
Russia has had an incredibly interesting and mostly uncredited underground electronic scene for some time. One of its flag bearers has been Ivan Pavlov (CoH). He has collaborated with Throbbing Gristle members Cosey Fanny Tutti and Peter Christopherson (as Soi Song). The LP is culled from 1996 recordings which were made with DAO (Andrej Dao Kolesov). DAO + CoH uses bass, guitars and custom ZX Spectrum and the results are pretty damn awesome. There is a distinct 90‘s flavour and yet it retains a freshness. ‘Propharadeia’ is a really driving track that makes me shake my body from finger to toe. ‘Oka’ is dark and sinister coming through like an Autechre / Muslimgauze hybrid, seething with eastern paranoia. ‘Sung In Sand' continues the eastern flavour with its building intricate yet subtle percussion and swooping synths. Kaula's debut is the vision of one Pietro Riparbelli (K11), an Italian artist who not only composed and recorded the whole thing, but also designed its cryptic booklet and contributed with organs, medianic chants, field recordings and radio signals. Kaula is a whole different beast to K11. What could be seen at first glance at some kind of weird black-metal outburst - including rasping vocals courtesy of Rosy from old-school death-metal warriors Profanal and buzzsaw guitars - soon makes sure all rules go out the window by using various metal (doom, thrash) and non-metal (noise industrial) elements and create a sonic black hole. All lyrics are based here on ancient text called ‘Avadhuta Gita’, said to have been originally written in the IXth century. This work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by Gisèle Vienne and Dennis Cooper, entitled 'Kindertotenlieder'. This CD is NOT the soundtrack to said piece, but a separate project. However, elements may appear in the finished piece which is to be premiered in Brest, France, March 2007. Pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern France during a thunderstorm. Others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight.

RONNIE SUNDIN - 'Seven Year Silence' CD (Fang Bomb)
By releasing "Seven Year Silence" Ronnie Sundin (once heralded "Sweden's most silent man") announces his departure from the realms of silence with an intelligent noise freak-out of massive proportions. This recording impresses with an innovative take on noise, an immensely deep and detailed interpretation that, just possibly, could help redefine parts of the genre. "The densest, most dynamic and near-impenetrable blasters I’ve yet heard to be issued in the name of electro-acoustic noise" and "A gorgeous release fit to accompany anxieties and emotions of the jet-black variety" (The Sound Projector). Presented in an A5, 12-page booklet with artwork by Sundin.
The bodies of two teenage girls were discovered on Sunday, July 29, 1973 on a dirt road near Coquille, OR. Both were nude and each girl shot once in the chest. The weapon used in the killings was a .22 cal rifle. The teenagers had been on a hiking and camping trip in LaVerne Park when the two met Roger Lynn Green who would later kill the two girls without provocation in a sudden and spontaneous act of violence. "Verdigris" was released on the 37th anniversary of the murders as a commemoration of sorts. The focus of this record is on the two victims Kathleen Marie Bechtel & Vicki Louise Fawcett. Sonne Hagal’s second full-length album once more bestows the listener with a journey into the unknown realms of poetry, mysteries and enthralling melodies. Closely connected to Europa’s folk-music tradition and the Northern mysteries, the band develops song structures that reach from simple traditional arrangements to complex compositions. The songs, performed in German and English, reveal rediscovered poems as well as self-written lyrics. The atmosphere of the songs varies from intimate, quiet parts to fresher, light-hearted and lively sounds up to heavy distorted parts supported by real or electronic drums. "Songs of Remorse" is the debut album from Italy's Stroszek, who play dark melancholic doom / emotional acoustic music. Stroszek comes from the Werner Herzog film of the same name and is the perfect moniker for a band with such a gloomy atmosphere. While the band contains members of Black Metal act Frostmoon Eclipse, this should be looked upon as a separate entity and not just a 'side project'. Taking on the form of a pair of conjoined drown-ed sailors it sets forth upon the currents determined to loose its apocalyptic vision upon the earth via droning sea shanty and great humming hymn. Sunken is the duo of sunken sailors Stefan Neville (Pumice) and Antony Milton (Black Boned Angel, Nether Dawn). It seems as though 'Willow's Song' (from "The Wicker Man" soundtrack) has made an impact on everyone who's heard it. All these years on, it still has a sense of the uncanny about it. The title song appears here in its original instrumental version, as performed by the band Magnet, and the remainder of this album is a selection of vintage recordings and traditional Folk songs that inspired the music featured on the film's soundtrack. It's worth remembering that while the music of "The Wicker Man" is often credited with having heavily influenced the various psychedelic folk revivals that have taken place since the '70s, those songs were written by New Yorker Paul Giovanni, and are far from the authentic Pagan tracts they've so often passed for. This Finders Keepers album goes some way toward reconnecting the film with the traditional material that inspired its legendary score, and includes children's rhymes like 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'Oranges and Lemons' sung with dulcimer accompaniment. You'll also notice appearances of medieval composition 'Miri It Is' and a 1960 recording of Child Ballad 'Willy O' Winsbury', both of which were modified and adapted for the soundtrack recordings.
