DAO & COH - 'Dzerzhinsk-9' LP (Tourette)
Russia has had an incredibly interesting and mostly uncredited underground electronic scene for some time. One of its flag bearers has been Ivan Pavlov (CoH). He has collaborated with Throbbing Gristle members Cosey Fanny Tutti and Peter Christopherson (as Soi Song). The LP is culled from 1996 recordings which were made with DAO (Andrej Dao Kolesov). DAO + CoH uses bass, guitars and custom ZX Spectrum and the results are pretty damn awesome. There is a distinct 90‘s flavour and yet it retains a freshness. ‘Propharadeia’ is a really driving track that makes me shake my body from finger to toe. ‘Oka’ is dark and sinister coming through like an Autechre / Muslimgauze hybrid, seething with eastern paranoia. ‘Sung In Sand' continues the eastern flavour with its building intricate yet subtle percussion and swooping synths. RICHARD FRANCIS - 'Together Alone, Together Apart' CD (CMR)
"The building blocks of 'Together Alone, Together Apart' by New Zealand's Richard Francis are 'sound moments': sonic interludes of a dozen or so seconds of environmental sound, whose subtle arrangements and cross-contaminations are the springboard for the compositions found here. Given the quiet volumes, sounds at the threshold of audibility are presumably those which have captured his imagination. A soft hiss and variable low end frequency introduce the first untitled track, with small crackles, glitches and echoes sporadically breaking through. The second is considerably more dramatic, with a flapping rhythm emerging from a grounded hiss like a moth's wings beating against glass. The final track is almost undetectable, even with headphones, and strengthens the connections between Francis's work and the reductive strategies of Bernhard Gunter or John Hudak..." [Wire]. Seth Nehil and John Grzinich have been sound collaborators since 1994. The exploratory focus here is the idea of resonance; the phenomenon of natural vibrations that give rise to intensified or stable structures within sound bodies and fields. The composers approached resonance in both the acoustic sound behaviour and the social phenomenon in group interaction and/or participation within the context of sound generating activities. It was again applied to the studio in the use of massive multiplications and layerings, resulting in deeply transforming, evolutionary sound fields. These pieces invite the listener to find his way through the reticulated and stratified development of a subtly unfolding, organic sound-body. Presented in a gatefold digifile.

Available for the first time on DVD! This is the deluxe DVD/CD reissue of the cult 1984 German film featuring William S. Burroughs, Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV), F.M. Einheit (Einstürzende Neubauten), Christiane F, the prolific underground film star Bill Rice. The DVD features include a beautiful colour-rich transfer of the film with newly translated English subtitles, the original trailer, a slide show of 75 still production photos by Ilse Ruppert, a documentary on the Italian 'Decoder Collective', a 46-minute audio interview with filmmaker Klaus Maeck, rare footage of Derek Jarman filming Burroughs on set, and Berlin riot news footage used in the film with a music loop by Genesis P-Orridge commissioned specially for this DVD release. The soundtrack CD features Soft Cell, early Einstürzende Neubauten, Matt Johnson (The The), Dave Ball and Genesis P-Orridge, and William Burroughs.
