One of several side-projects to emerge from the Wolvserpent camp, Aelter is the solo effort of Wolvserpent guitarist Blake Green. Aelter explores a similar realm of dark majestic sound to Wolvserpent, with massive downtuned guitar roar and bleak minor key melodies being the common thread between the two projects. But where Wolvserpent blends this chugging Melvins-esque heaviness and haunting slowcore arpeggios with violins, pounding drums, and a propensity for extended hypno-dirges, Aelter dispenses with the drums almost completely and goes for a more cinematic approach using layered keyboards and gorgeous harmonised voices, fused to a malevolent black heaviness. The debut MCD by Armon Kuilu is a funereal musical journey, two long progressive / folk compositions built out mostly of classical piano, strings, orchestral drums, singing, prayers and invocations in male and female voices. The soundscapes bring to mind images of forlorn cemetaries, initiatory cults, bloodletting, woodlands and altered states of consciousness. At times the melodies of chamber music break out into squeals, groans and crackling which haunt the space and resonate with the Finnish poetry, that most of the time reminds one of a satanic ceremony. Those readers familiar with the world of experimental music will know the name David Jackman, primarily from his work under the name Organum. As Organum, Jackman has created some of the finest, most haunting drone recordings of the last decade. This CD is a reissue of a 1996 cassette-only release that appeared in an edition of only 61 copies. Perhaps slightly similar to the sampling work of John Wall, here Jackman has taken found recordings of orchestras, and overlaid them to create two eerie collections of string ensemble collage. K11 - 'Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D.' Enhanced CD (Actual Noise)
K11 is the nom de plume of the Italian sound artist Pietro Riparbelli. For "Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D.", Riparbelli entered Assisi Cathedral (completed in 1230 A.D.) in the Umbria region of Italy, not far from Riparelli’s hometown of Tuscany. The audio was recorded in the cathedral’s lower basilica, the oldest area, where the relics of St. Francis Of Assisi reside. Utilising short-wave radio as his primary instrument Riparbelli has captured a haunting array of cavernous sounds, displaced signals and found ambiance. With the addition of some voice and organ elements, "Metaphonic Portrait 1230 A.D." sounds not unlike the recordings of Philip Jeck and William Basinski under the influence of Crowleyean Magick and Sacred Geometry. A video shot inside the cathedral by Riparbelli is included on the disc to give the listener a visual picture of the aging structure. As in all K11’s work, the themes of magick, religion, numerology and esotericism are present throughout this reverent document of aural mysticism. Digipak.

Reissue of Puissance's 1999 album. RAMONA PONZINI & Z'EV - 'Ankoku' CD (A Silent Place)
Ramona's personal touch is certainly her own particular Japanese chant, together with the use of traditional percussion, bells and cymbals from Japan. Z'EV, enchanted by all those elements, asked Ramona for this cooperation. "Ankoku" is a Japanese word which means "deep darkness". For this debut Ramona's voice and percussion was processed by My Cat Is An Alien in their mysterious studio, placed somewhere in Western Alps, adding some field recordings. Those recordings were then sent to Z'EV who has processed them with some of his typical percussion. "Rage Inside The Window" is the astounding debut album from Indiana based dark ambient artist Rasalhague, offering some of the most haunting, dread filled, and yet dynamic atmospheres we've come across in some time. "Finis Gloriae Mundi" is the third album from Rising Shadows. Once again the beautiful voice of Linda-li enriches the mysterious and complex musical textures created by Fredrik Klingwall. The Swedish duo now goes well beyond their neoclassical and medieval roots and leave the boundaries of a genre. Together with co-producer Mattias Olsson and several session musicians they explore new layers of instruments and rhythms in their music. Reissue of Millis' extremely limited 2008 release (Ltd x 120). Despite his many activities, Millis' recorded output has almost entirely been by way of collaboration, making this gem of a solo album all the more special. Psychedelic smear pocked with snippets of conversation, poetic extracts from his collection of 78s and a judicious amount of vinyl crackling. Blissed out shimmers constructed from loops and drones from guitar, bells, and glass harmonica, where haunted melodies from times long gone whisper through the mix. VARGHKOGHARGASMAL - 'Drowned In Lakes' CD (Tumult)
This one-man German act creates a difficult sound to describe... The vocals are minimal, a hushed whisper here and there, a Viking style chant during one song, but it's mostly left to the music, which is incredibly evocative, it's like some sort of acoustic black metal, mixed with slowed down surf rock, dark languorous krautrock, and a distinct Morricone vibe too. Most of the songs creep and crawl, sometimes behind a curtain of rainfall, the sound of the forest spirits, flickering firelight, fireflies lighting up the canopy overhead. Pianos pick out mournful melodies, the drums, lurching along, a perfectly imperfect accompaniment, organs wheeze, synths whir, steel strings twang, the whole thing so impossibly transcendent, effortlessly evoking ancient atmospheres and deep emotions. Hauntingly beautiful. Ltd x 1000 copies.

"Seid" is the debut album from Ritual Noise / Folk act Vazhes. In popular etymology of the Permian Komis, "vazhes" or "vazh otir" means an ancient people. The Permian Komis call "vazhes" the early population of the Upper Kama, which are supposed to have disappeared when the "new" or "wil" people of the Permian Komis arrived in these lands. The album consists of 4 lengthy tracks and is dedicated to the violent struggle between the contemporary chaotic society and the eternal natural harmony, embodied in traditional cultures. Whilst one of the core members, Alexei Borisov, remains a prolific force in contemporary electronic sound-art, Volga successfully weave a wide range of influences. Driven by the highly impressive, strong and often haunting voice of Angela Manukjan, Volga's sound carefully picks away at electronica's more interesting contours; electro-acoustic elements; mantric dance rhythms and a variety of traditional, Shamanistic or folk styles from both their native country and far beyond. Most of Angela's lyrics are derived from 19th Century Russian folklore, lending the native vocals an even more unique slant. Volga appeared on Susan Lawly's 'Extreme Music From Russia' compilation.

Collaborative effort between Torba of Italy and French harsh noise wall legend Vomir. On the first side Torba takes the fore: his scraping metal trash collapses down Vomir's crumbling static walls. Torba has a HNW-approach to his noise in that the sounds on here don't really go anywhere; it ends abruptly just as it came in. The second side has the harsh Vomir wall really to the fore, with piercing insect noise scraping away at it constantly. A top HNW collaboration! Ltd x 325 copies with a screenprinted sleeve.

The 2nd album of this very promising project from the medieval lands bordering the cold North Sea, Flanders (North-Belgium). Dramatically straying from the neofolk path of their debut album “Galder”, “Symphonies of Divination” offers dark and bombastic compositions with clear references to Slavonic, German and Scandinavian classical music. Heavy percussion, assiduous spiccato string sections, dramatic horn accents and haunting choirs form the backbone of this album. The cold and eerie narrative vocals enhance the grim atmosphere of the music even further. The lyrics, mainly in English but with hints of Dutch, Old-Norse and Swedish, are devoted to Indo-Germanic religion, myth and legend, the Nietzschean spirit and relentlessly attest to the grotesque decline of the modern world. WHOURKR - 'Concrete' CD (Crucial Blast)
The 2nd album from French deathtronix duo Whourkr is a whirlwind of electronically processed and treated avant-death/grind that is as violent and brutal as it is complex and obsessively constructed, relying as much on samplers and software as it does on bonecrushing riffs, screaming and hyperspeed blastbeats. Following a similar strategy as James Plotkin's post-production grind experiments on the first Phantomsmasher album, all of the guitars, drums, and vocals are arranged and recorded by Whourkr and then run through a gauntlet of hardcore editing and remixing. Total chaos deathgrind filtered through a futuristic cuisinart of ultra-aggressive electronica, like a freaked-out epileptic mashup of Atari Teenage Riot, Dying Fetus, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Venetian Snares, Blut Aus Nord, and John Zorn. Z'EV - 'Outwaard' CD (Korm Plastics)
Beginning with the 2007 release 'Forwaard', rhythmajikal percussionist Z'EV continues his collaborations with Frans De Waard in the form of the latest installment, 'Outwaard'. Whereas the sound sources used on 'Forwaard' where of a varying nature, on 'Outwaard' they were all made at a petting zoo in Kleve, Germany. These recordings which are 'recoded' by Z'EV into a 40-minute, densely layered pattern of musique concrete. Many of the animal call like sounds disappear in the 'recoded' version and makes a particular strong work, but occasionally one returns and leaves a no less than haunting listening experience. Ltd x 300 in outsized sleeve.
