This is the alias of Hiroshi Hashimoto. The first cut 'At The National Border' is stunning with it's electronic bleeps, bells and strings which make way for a breathtaking vocal surrounded by a chorus of vocal drones. I can imagine this soundtracking an epic Samurai movie. Just when you think things couldn't any better the track switches gear and I'm left in goosebump city. 'Wavelength To Amplify' has Hiroshi bring the noise with pounding drums, manipulated samples and acidic squiggles perhaps recalling bits of Meat Beat Manifesto. 'Acid Rain 2' on the B-side has some brain melting synthesizer sounds give way to a piano motif, congas, melancholy strings and sampled dialogue then a big thumping slow and heavy kick drum drops by. CRISIS - 'Holocaust Hymns' CD (Apop Records)
Crisis came into existence in the late '70s amidst the British hardcore punk movement. They took the same energy that came from the youthful, raw anger of the Oi! movement, but with restrained lyrical phrasing and strict rhythms. Members include Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford who would later expand upon some of the Crisis material for their Neofolk group DEATH IN JUNE. Wakeford later went on to form SOL INVICTUS, whilst Luke Rendall and Lester Jones would later find involvement in Theatre Of Hate and Sex Gang Children, respectively. Produced in 2010 for Germany’s hr2-kultur radio, “20 Zonen” (20 Zones) is Marc Behrens’ homage to Darmstadt, Germany, his hometown, and in particular the city’s Kranichstein district, where he grew up and learned to listen. Behrens made recordings in such locations like an equestrian club, a heavy ion research unit, a railway museum, and of trains and airplanes noisily cutting through the supposed serenity of the industrially planted forests around Darmstadt. From time to time the subjective microphone goes underwater and dips into the area’s various ponds, among them the world famous Messel Pit Fossil site. The intricately edited material is arranged into zones that form themselves into cells, into blocks, into a topophonic cross vein, set in a grey area between musique concrète and phonography. In 2009, as part of the ‘All Around You’ season of sonic events at The Cube, Simon Whetham was invited to produce a site-specific work for a half-derelict shopping centre called ‘The Mall’ in Bristol. He explored the space with various microphones and techniques to uncover sounds not normally heard by the shopping public. "Memories of childhood visits portrayed the shopping centre as a crammed and noisy place, every shop a brightly lit shrine, drawing in it’s worshippers… On returning to The Mall, it was apparent that the current recession had hit hard, with almost half the units with their shutters down, possibly never to open again. The seemingly empty drones of the various processes that keep a structure like this alive could be heard over the scattering of shoppers. Behind the scenes, the drones become more musical and tonal, singing a lament to the financial situation and to better times. VA - 'Willows Songs' CD (Finders Keepers)
It seems as though 'Willow's Song' (from "The Wicker Man" soundtrack) has made an impact on everyone who's heard it. All these years on, it still has a sense of the uncanny about it. The title song appears here in its original instrumental version, as performed by the band Magnet, and the remainder of this album is a selection of vintage recordings and traditional Folk songs that inspired the music featured on the film's soundtrack. It's worth remembering that while the music of "The Wicker Man" is often credited with having heavily influenced the various psychedelic folk revivals that have taken place since the '70s, those songs were written by New Yorker Paul Giovanni, and are far from the authentic Pagan tracts they've so often passed for. This Finders Keepers album goes some way toward reconnecting the film with the traditional material that inspired its legendary score, and includes children's rhymes like 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'Oranges and Lemons' sung with dulcimer accompaniment. You'll also notice appearances of medieval composition 'Miri It Is' and a 1960 recording of Child Ballad 'Willy O' Winsbury', both of which were modified and adapted for the soundtrack recordings. There's much to recommend this compilation - not only for fans of The Wicker Man, but anyone with an interest in archived British folk. An essential purchase! CD in jewelcase with obi strip.

Z'EV - 'Sum Things' CD (Cold Spring CSR101CD)
Through an element darkly... In the fall of 2005 Z'EV began dipping deep into his archives and selecting recordings to produce 'sum things / a possible form for cold dark matter', a project reflecting his take on the 'dark ambience' genre. Composed between December 2005 and March 2006, these 6 pieces endeavour to transport the listener deep into their long forgotten memories of the primal forces at the dawn of creation. Each piece is based on a single sound source. Absolutely no effects of any kind, not even equalization, were applied to the source recordings. Instead Z'EV relied solely on the stretching of the duration and pitch of the samples and then edited and mixed the results down into the heart of space. Hear then, the state of the art in elemental musics. Not to forget the beautiful packaging by artist Abby Helasdottir.
