Dead Raven Choir DEAD RAVEN CHOIR - 'Cask Strength Black Metal' 2 x CD (Supernal Music)

DCD version of the Weird Forest 3LP boxset from Polish artist Smolken (Wolfmangler). The most insane black metal release ever! Harsh sounding evil, atmospheric off-kilter black metal. Call it black metal folk. Many traditional folk songs shrouded in blasts of white noise armageddon. For fans of twisted, unique, raw black metal with a very bent edge. Pray (no, commit ritual sacrifice) to the underworld that your stereo survives! For fans of Leviathan, Gorgoroth, Draugar, Xasthur, Burzum etc.

Dreamcatcher / VinylLP DREAMCATCHER - 'Prom Night / Eyes Of Leatherface' LP (.ANGLE.REC.)

Dreamcatcher's hot-wired, saturated and hypnotic sound layers, as well as strings and splatters of sonic mess and Power Electronics / old-school / new school aesthetics, have earned them a devoted following in Montreal and beyond. Originally released on cassette in very limited editions on the American Tapes label (run by Wolf Eyes’ John Olson) and Nautical Almanac's Heresee label respectively, "Prom Night " and "Eyes Of Leatherface " are archived here for a larger audience and for posterity. Includes material from their first recorded sessions, and ranks among the favourites of the duo. Without a doubt one of the sickest, most twisted and noisiest releases from ANGLE.REC. so far! Ltd x 300 hand-numbered copies on180g clear vinyl in a stickered sleeve. Canadian import.

Falkenstein FALKENSTEIN - 'Urdarbrunnen' CD (Heimatfolk)

Falkenstein's self produced debut-album "Heiliger Wald" gained a lot of praise in Folk music press. Their 2nd album "Urdarbrunnen" is now released by the Steinklang Neofolk sub-label Heimatfolk. "Urdarbrunnen" is again a perfecly played, strong and dreamingly beautiful album with a rich, varied instrumentation, even more dense and powerful than the debut album. The musical range lasts from acoustic ballads over Martial Folk songs to dark fairie tales about mysticism, paganism and natural rites in the Alpine regions. If Falkenstein were around 40 years earlier, they would stand in line with bands like early Steeleye Span, Magna Carta and Pentangle. Digipak with 16-page booklet.

First Human Ferro FIRST HUMAN FERRO - 'Homo Shargey' CD (New Nihilism / Requiem Records / Triangle)

Alexander Shargey (Yuriy Kondratyuk) is a representative of passionate enthusiastic inventors who put their lives at stake to accomplish the mission for the future good of the whole mankind. Shargey belongs to a cohort of scientists who were the first to foresee the conquering of space. They were great, yet mocked-at, dreamers and had to fight against all odds twice as hard. Shargey is a recognised space theoretic of unique unconventional genius, yet passed away in 1942 - a generation before Apollo. Ukrainians First Human Ferro pay a long overdue tribute to its compatriot, composing a well-crafted vintage dark ambient album with both poignant and mesmerising layers of sidereal voyage. Mastered by Italian ambient magician Vestigial. Ltd x 500 copies in an A5 silver varnished digipak.

Folkearth FOLKEARTH - 'Songs Of Yore' CD (Stygian Crypt Productions)

Fifth album from this folk / Viking metal project. Bringing together many musicians across countries and continents and boasting a wide array of styles that cover the folk spectrum from almost every possible angle, this is one very interesting effort indeed. Here a conscious effort is made to explore the acoustic side of folk music, meaning that gone are all the metal elements and what we’re left with is a vocal album with embellishments provided by many diverse acoustic instruments like acoustic guitars, cellos, celtic harps, violins, accordions, whistles, flutes, bodrans, mandolins, banjos, clarinets, galician bagpipes, soprano recorders and recorders. Uplifting pieces to some balladry and melancholic contemplative tracks.

Harvestman / VinylLP HARVESTMAN - 'In A Dark Tongue - Black' 2 x LP (Burning World Records)

Sumptuous double vinyl treatment of this 2009 album (Neurot Recordings). Harvestman is the brainchild of Neurosis vocalist / guitarist Steve Von Till, who considers "In A Dark Tongue" a venture into an imagined past. The album is inspired by Hawkwind, Fairport Convention, Tangerine Dream, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Skullflower, Caspar Brotzman and Loop, among others. It is a massive meeting point of styles and influences, all of which boil down to a surreal and inspired sound. The first Harvestman record, "A Grave Is A Grim Horse", was a dizzying confluence of delicate 70s British style folk, shimmery spaced out drift and glacial doom-drone sprawl, a constantly evolving, organic song suite that seemed to exist in some glorious blissed out druggy spacefolk otherworld. On "In A Dark Tongue", the glimmering strands of traditional folk music that had tethered the first record become even more tenuous. Black vinyl in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Hyena Hive / 7inch HYENA HIVE - 'See Saw Sav Ann Ah!' 7" (.ANGLE.REC.)

Until now, Hyena Hive’s sonic imprint has been rarely captured on disc. In the beginning, they delivered a very intense, rich and most honest noise-rock sound… but after that, percussion vanished to give way to a sound with a more Power Electronics colour, whose presence is now well affirmed in Hyena Hive’s audio universe. To document this phase, the flamboyant and demented "See Saw Sav Ann Ah!" is issued in 7" format. Two relentless tracks, and by far one of the most abrasive releases from the .ANGLE.REC. camp. This is in the image of all their most recent live performances! Lots of intensity to spare for fearless ears! Ltd x 250 hand-numbered copies in a deluxe cardboard envelope sleeve.

Hypsiphrone HYPSIPHRONE - 'And The Void Shall Pierce Their Eyes' CD (Black Plagve / Malignant Records)

Debut album from this one man project from Greece, fitting right in with labelmate Sewer Goddess in its ability to create innately evil and impure sounds, integrating elements of doom metal, black metal, and dark experimentalism into the pure industrial horror that constitutes the majority of this release. The result is nothing short of absolute and abject dread; 8 tracks spanning an hour worth of material…an auditory overload that’s completely immersive, and at times overwhelming , where heaving masses of percussive doom collide with shuddering machinery dirge, ghoulish and nightmarish ambience, torturous screams, and cinematic depravity, the sounds layered into a tangled and abstract tapestry of something completely epic and nearly majestic in its scale. Fans of Gnaw Their Tongues, Abruptum and “Necro Evangelicum” era BDN will do well to wallow in the oozing blackness and unbridled malevolence Hypsiphrone has created.   Maaaa / K2 MAAAA & K2 - 'Split' CD (Triangle)

New compositions by a Warsaw duo and a Japanese surgeon are presented on this 50-minute album. MAAAA buzzes using the Korg MS-20 and Polivoks synthesizers, and they clink damaging iron pieces and coil springs. Dr. Kusafuka (K2) handles his stylus like a scalpel. Having decided not to employ metal garbage, he turns to extensive use of his analogue synth, creating loud and sharp pieces of work reminiscent of a surgical knife cutting flesh. All in all, be prepared for the heavy analogue modulations, drilling feedback, rich bass, pulsations, biting high frequencies and the hazardous loudness of the record. Extreme Harsh Noise!   Maurizio Bianchi MAURIZIO BIANCHI - 'Ludium' CD (Silentes Minimal Editions)

A long and almost solemn track built with reverberated piano notes, a slow and rhythmical flow leaned on a background made of clashing hisses and vague, distant, rustling ambient noises. A brief interval based on obscure drones moving in circles, inexorably entangled on themselves. Then another long piano-based track, this time more dilated, confused, ethereal and prim, so much that it takes the distinguishing features of an indecipherable sonic mass, abstract and booming, estranging, deep and psychedelic. A few and minimal elements, “directed” in a masterly fashion and assembled in an absolutely fundamental work, from the brightest mind of the Italian experimental scene and of all the music “without compromise” of the last thirty years.

Michel Banabila MICHEL BANABILA - 'The Latest Research From The Department Of Electrical Engineering' CD (Tapu Records / Lumberton Trading Company / AudioTong)

The latest work from Dutch composer Michel Banabila. The music is created mainly from electrical sources, but the approach is not clinical, rather mechanical, loud, intrusive, but also has a distinct human factor to it. It is clearly Banabila doing the engineering here, obviously enjoying his new 'mad scientist' incarnation. Some of the recordings arose from earlier mix-versions of tracks originally made for the dance performance ZOUT, by Conny Janssen Danst & Anne Soldaat. Unlike previous Banabila albums, there is very little of the so-called 'world music', voice samples or jazz influences, but instead a mainly electronic angle, with a special contribution by sound-artist/performer Zenial (AudioTong, Vivo Records). 40mins of music. Ltd x 300 copies in a card sleeve.

Niko Skorpio NIKO SKORPIO - 'Psilocybe Necrophila' CD (Some Place Else)

"Psilocybe Necrophila" refers to a psychoactive mushroom that grows on decomposing flesh. Although recorded mostly in 2007, parallel to last year's acclaimed "Half Born in Half Light", it is quite a different trip. The basis of this work was Niko Skorpio's old cassette tape collection from the 1980's. Containing mostly heavy metal demos and live bootlegs, the dozens of KMs of obsolete tape were sacrificed on the altar of creation. Tape was deconstructed, cut, mangled, eaten and torn apart by a number of malfunctioning cassette players. These emerging mutations were captured, processed and reconstructed, over and over until a new form began to take shape. Carefully chosen and prepared additional ingredients were then introduced to this primal tissue in order to impregnate it with a new kind of energy. Ltd x 418 hand-numbered copies in a 6-panel A5 sleeve.

Skinwell SKINWELL - 'Tunnels' CD (.ANGLE.REC.)

A whole assortment of subtle electronic pulsations are concocted here by Christian Corvellec, always adequately supporting the sound fabrics woven by Martin Dumais (Aun), and which also are their starting point. A light at the end of the tunnel, penetrating different fissures along the walls, penetrating our mind with echoes. One only has to imagine a minimal tech project gone the drone-ocean way… pulsations are always there, but tinged with a sonic fog that is heavy, damp and fluid at the same time and which always suggests, in the end, uncertain twists and turns in this crossing of tunnels. Mastered by John Sellekaers (Xingu Hill, Urawa). File next to Cranioclast, Troum and Zoviet France. Ltd x 333 numbered copies in a deluxe cardboard sleeve with spot-varnish.

Sphere Rex SPHERE REX - 'For Electronics And Piano' CD (Shadowplay Release / Monopoly Records / Muzyka Voln)

Sphere Rex is the solo project of MK (Cyclotimia), playing ambient in a traditional vein (uncommon for today), combining minimalism and a background style of electronic music a la Brian Eno and piano improvisations based on proto-ambient ideas of Erik Satie. This music is able to calm down and lull to sleep like alpha-wave rhythms or paint weird images guided by the surreal titles of compositions in one's imagination. For the goals of complete authenticity only analogue devices were used in recordings, as well as tube pre-amps and compressors from 60s-70s. Ltd x 500 copies. Russian import.

The Beautiful Schizophonic / Crónica THE BEAUTIFUL SCHIZOPHONIC - 'Erotikon' CD (Cronica)

Jorge Mantas' brand new selection of micro-drones and digitised textural ambience. The music is full of mystery and wistfulness. In its early stages the album delivers piano tones glistening brightly through the filtered static on 'Aysha' and entangled signals stewing in the watery tonalities of 'Blumarine'. On 'Alba' (with piano by Yui Onodera), Mantas incorporates an excerpt from the 1860 recording of ‘Au Clair De Lune’, thought to be the very first audio document of a human voice. Uncannily, the ruptured, hauntingly broken sound of the recording chimes with the ethereal qualities running through Mantas’ music. 6-panel digisleeve.

The Memories Attack THE MEMORIES ATTACK - 'LP2' CD (Tumult / Noyes Records)

The Memories Attack are a duo, augmented by an occasional drummer, who sound like they were transported directly from the early 90s, bringing with them all the jangle pop, lo-fi bedroom folk, crunchy distorted guitar, gorgeous vocal harmonies, busted effects pedals, old synths, incredible hooks, shimmering metallic drones and catchy songs they could stuff into an old beat up suitcase. Every track here is some glorious strain of perfect pop, whether it's a chunk of old school college rock jangle, a burst of synth infused almost metal crunch, wild wooly lo-fi garage-y stomp, or hushed intimate bedroom pop, it's all so catchy and rocking and irresistible. And it's all held together by some sort of mysterious pop music magic that few have mastered and even fewer understand, but which never fails to totally and utterly entrance every time.

This is the first chapter of a 3 DCD series. Doom and Sludge bands transmit the same feelings of old horror movies, it's creepy and primitive with slow motions. 2 and a half hours of doom & sludge from: Atavist, Feast Of Sins (2 tracks), Ghost Empire (2 tracks), Moloch (3 tracks), Stasis (3 tracks), The Austrasian Goat (3 tracks), The Whorehouse Massacre (3 tracks) and Welter In Thy Blood.
