This is mainly occult-inspired instrumental music - sacral with hints of great dark temple halls, demons, mystical rites and churches. Instruments like piano, farfisa organ, dark ritualistic drums, harps and various string instruments were used and this sound will appeal to followers of Arcana and the medieval / neo-symphonic genres. Abnocto is Simon Kölle (Musterion, Za Frûmi) and Simon Heath (Atrium Carceri, Za Frûmi). Recorded 60 meters below the centre of Stockholm in a long forgotten chamber among the tunnels.

ALL MY FAITH LOST - 'In A Sea, In A Lake, In A River... Or In A Teardrop' CD (Infinite Fog Productions)
Reissue of the second album from Italians All My Faith Lost (with the original lineup of 4), originally issued on Sin.Org. This album focuses on the spirits of the water, with stories and tales that tell about faeries, witches, elves and everything else living in the water. Water that can be rain, the water of a river or of a lake but can be also a tear. Acoustic and classic guitars are the main instruments at the base of the compositions, flutes and delicate synths create, light arrangements giving that ethereal mood that would be more present in the following releases of the band (on Cold Meat Industry / Projekt). The vocal parts are equally divided amongst male and female, creating a perfect balance between heavenly/frail and profound/dark atmospheres. Ltd x 1000 copies in a gatefold digisleeve.

AMON - 'Foundation' 2 x CD (AFE Records / Eibon Records)
"Foundation" features most of the tracks originally contained on the first untitled Amon album (1996), the whole "Mer" limited edition release (2000), and a few unreleased/rare bonus tracks. All tracks were remastered specially for this release. "Wondering why AMON is widely considered a dark ambient legend? This double CD will show you why.... You'll find no deeper nor darker ambient anywhere else." Presented in a gatefold digisleeve with inner sleeves. A very desirable piece from this Italian legend (aka Andrea Marutti).
"Nona" takes inspiration from a case of xenoglossy (the ability to speak in an unlearned and unheard foreign language, often associated with past-life recall, trance or hypnosis) discovered in Great Britain around the early Thirties when a woman in state of trance expressed herself in a language which was recognised as ancient Egyptian. This voice from the past was called "Nona" or "The One Without a Name". This release introduces new elements for Amon and could be filed both under Dark Ambient and Avantgarde. Comes in 10" wallet!

AMON / NIMH - 'Sator' CD (Eibon Records)
The mystery of the ancient and puzzling magic Sator square is evoked through five dark tracks. Amon (Andrea Marutti) is and established Dark Ambient project and Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) is a well-known and eclectic alchemist of electronic-ethnic–acoustic-ambient sound mixtures. Together they have produced massive magmatic sounds mixed with the technologic and synthetic vibrations of oscillating sinewaves and with frosty isolationist timbres programmed through fluxes of information written in binary code… Echoes of breathless and confused human activities falling into decay, the dark and deep sound of earth’s abysses, scoriae of electric buzzes and synthetic microsounds, the warmth of subliminal melodies. ANNI HOGAN - 'Kickabye' 2 x CD (Cold Spring CSR99CD)
From her early days as a legendary Batcave DJ, through her work with Marc Almond, Anni Hogan is one of the true geniuses of the alternative scene. A composer, songwriter, arranger, producer, promoter and DJ, she helped to shape the sound of the 80s. Cold Spring is proud to present her debut release expanded and brought to the public for the first time on CD. The second CD is also tracks from the same period, featuring YELLO and with production by BARRY ADAMSON. Digitally remastered with 4 new and exclusive song versions.
On a Friday in September many years ago 3 girls went into a large forest in northern Germany. They never returned. Apoptose followed their path into the woods and listened closely to the voices whispering among the trees. "Bannwald" reflects the girls' journey to a realm of witchcraft, fairy-tales and ancient goddesses. Here in the green twilight of rustling leafs and crackling twigs nothing is as it seems and reality is covered by a thick layer of autumn foliage. The term "Bannwald" bears a double meaning: On one hand it stands for a protected woodland where nobody is allowed to cut trees or even to enter. On the other hand "Bann" is an ancient word for ban or spell. After the urban nightmares of "Schattenmädchen", Apoptose come back to the northern wilderness once more, the home of their first album "Nordland". On "Bannwald" they join forces again to invoke the spirits of moss-covered stones and hidden glades. Comes in a superb spot-varnished 8-panel digisleeve, with a booklet and a separate CD sleeve. This album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak, blackened guitar ambience, a smattering of piano, skyreaching guitar harmonies) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound. CHRIS CONNELLY AND THE BELLS - 'Blonde Exodus / The Ultimate Seaside Companion' 2 x CD (Dream Catcher)
"Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. But this album makes a case for him as a solo artist worth watching". (AMG)

LOCRIAN - 'Territories' LP (At War With False Noise / Basses Frequences / BloodLust! / Small Doses)
André Foisy and Terence Hannum have spent the last several years honing the Locrian sound. They've taken elements from noise, power electronics, drone, and black metal to come up with a truly unique sound reflecting the sprawling urban decay surrounding them in Chicago. For this release, Locrian has pulled out all the stops and fleshed out the band with the help of Mark Solotroff (Bloodyminded), Blake Judd (Nachtmystium), Bruce Lamont (Yakuza) and Andrew Scherer (Velnias). The results of this massive collaborative effort are apparent from the moment the album starts. The textures run darker and deeper; the vocals - sometimes three layers deep - seem to be conjured from the decrepit muck of a failed civilisation; the feedback takes on a more pronounced presence; and the big band allows for full-on black metal assaults that burst out of the tortured drones Locrian have come to be known for. LUSTMORD - 'The Place Where The Black Stars Hang' CD (Soleilmoon / Side Effects)
"The Place Where the Black Stars Hang” was first released in 1994 on Side Effects, and while the earlier Lustmord album "Heresy" gave birth to the "Dark Ambient" genre, it is “The Place Where the Black Stars Hang” that defines it. It’s a work regularly cited by critics, audiences and musicians as being amongst the very best and most influential albums of its decade. This new edition has been re-mastered and given new artwork. The differences are subtle yet powerful, giving the album a more nuanced feeling of space and detail than ever before. Oft imitated, but never equalled, Lustmord: The Power of Sound.
MATT SHOEMAKER - 'Tropical Amnesia One' CD (Ferns Recordings)
"More field recordings here, this time around taken from the Amazonas, Brazil, to precise the Mamori Lake. Shoemaker taped the sounds there and treats the whole thing into one piece of music that lasts 64 minutes. If I was to imagine how the Amazonian rainforest would sound like, I think it would sound like this. A fairly thick mass of busy buzzing insect sounds, birds and wind like sounds. Shoemaker opts for a dramatic approach in this work: things start out relatively quiet and moody, but over the course of those 60 some minutes grows with some violent intention. Shoemaker uses strong equalisation, adding low end sounds to the piece, that makes the earth tremble among the heavy weight of this piece. Yet he never loses the clarity of the sounds, birds and insects are always to be recognised here. An excellent piece along the lines of the best of Francisco Lopez (who organises the annual Mamori Sound Project. Shoemaker delivers a great work, perhaps his best so far" (Vital Weekly). NEVER KNOWN - 'On The Edge Of Forever' CD (Eibon Records)
The Dark Ambient (and earliest) project of Andrea Marutti (Amon). The 4th full-length in the Never Known saga, and this time it's even better than before... Deep melodies, rumbling drones, the new edge of forever... Digipak.
NICK CASTRO & THE POISON TREE - 'Further From Grace' CD (Strange Attractors Audio House)
"Further From Grace" bewitches with an intoxicating mood sustained throughout. The instrumentation is lush and exotic - flugelhorn, lap dulcimer and mijwiz are deftly melded into a pan-cultural elixir comprised of American and British folk traditions, classical balladry and Middle Eastern. Masterful songwriting, ornamented by Castro's ardent vocals and dreamlike lyrics, are relieved by hypnotic instrumental passages. Induced by flourishes of psychedelic 60's folk bards like Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine) and Bert Jansch, laced with flashes of Amon Düül-like acoustic communal atmosphere, "Further From Grace" is an acid-folk masterpiece advancing today's sound into sparkling new frontiers.
PAINTING PETALS ON PLANET GHOST - 'Fallen Camellias' CD (A Silent Place)
Second full-length album from Italian brothers Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien) and vocalist Ramona Ponzini (Praxinoscope). 'Fallen Camellias' is a tribute to one of the greatest poetess ever, Japanese Yosano Akiko, whose work in literature in the early 1900's is considered as manifesto of the Japanese Romanticism. Imagine a Vashti Bunyan or a early Marianne Faithful singing sweet melodies in Japanese language, and you can have an idea of the musical and poetical universe of PPOPG. The songs of 'Fallen Camellias' are built on acoustic guitar melodies and are made of the same pure, melancholy of the legendary Nick Drake. Let 'Fallen Camellias' be your warm blanket, as well as the promise of a new future spring. 6-panel digipak.

PENITENT - 'Among The Sleepless' CD (Hydra)
11th official release from Norwegian act Penitent (aka Karsten Hamre) since 1994. Penitent continues with very varied ambient puzzles, creating a pure dark collage, based around the themes of graveyards and death. An orchestral touch appears now and than while a few other cuts move into more explicit experimental fields. Diverse ambient soundscapes are lead by a repetitive rhythmic background. Overall, agreat illustration of all the knowledge and maturity of this project. Penitent remains quite faithful to its established style and sound. Hydra is a division of the Salvation Group.

PRAXINOSCOPE - 'Praxinoscope' Picture Disc LP (A Silent Place)
Praxinoscope is a project which unites the duo Roberto Opalio (one-half of My Cat Is An Alien) and Ramona Ponzini. Here Ponzini plays little Japanese percussions and wind chimes, creating a resonant texture over Roberto's alien wordless vocals and space electronics. The material comes from a whole session recorded in a mysterious location of the Western Alps, directly transferred to CD using neither overdubs nor outtakes. For the entire length of its 40 minutes, the piece will stifle your breath because of its pure essence and intimate mood; a mystic, suffocated chant reminding the silence of ancient rituals, the ultimate exorcism to avert the Infinite Pain. Ltd x 500 copies on a full-colour picture disc with psychedelic artwork in a printed PVC sleeve.

RAMONA PONZINI & Z'EV - 'Ankoku' CD (A Silent Place)
Ramona's personal touch is certainly her own particular Japanese chant, together with the use of traditional percussion, bells and cymbals from Japan. Z'EV, enchanted by all those elements, asked Ramona for this cooperation. "Ankoku" is a Japanese word which means "deep darkness". For this debut Ramona's voice and percussion was processed by My Cat Is An Alien in their mysterious studio, placed somewhere in Western Alps, adding some field recordings. Those recordings were then sent to Z'EV who has processed them with some of his typical percussion. Z'EV deconstructed the sweetness of Ramona's chants, enfolding the pieces with a darker atmosphere. 5 obscure tracks, structured on charming vocal melodies moving out from a "haunted house". RAPOON - 'Wasteland Raga' CD (Aquarellist)
Brand new release from ethno-ambient act Rapoon. "While I was recently traveling through Eastern Europe recently, I passed through an area of industrial decline that reminded me strongly of the devastation of the Industrial heartlands of the UK during the early Thatcher years. The broken windows and twisted metal of the abandoned warehouses, the derelict pit-heads and the ruined factories all brought back memories of that grim time when the divide between rich and poor was never so obvious. Yet amongst the derelict factories and the red-brick estates of the North of England new music and art sprang forth as if driven by the desolate conditions. Out of the darkness came forth beauty in many forms. Wasteland Raga is a remembrance of those times when art and politics held close and intertwined out of a real sense of purpose and unity... Viva revolution!!!". Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak with two artcards.

REHBERG & BAUER - 'Passt' CD (Touch)
Following 'Faßt' and 'Ballt', 'Passt' completes Peter Rehberg and Ramon Bauer's trilogy for Touch. Full of effects, glitches, pulses and interruptions, this music puts you in surprising places as it constantly shifts its gears. Rehberg and Bauer subject their sounds to all manner of effects and run them through the cogs on their laptops, which slice and dice them into multitudes of abstract and often harsh electronic elements. All tracks were recorded live at three venues in Sydney and Melbourne in 2000.

ROME - 'L'Assassin' MCD (Trisol)
The Assassin - Murder? Crime of passion? Rome's new 'Chanson Noir' speaks of man's enslavement in a world of constant transformation. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more influential in their current work. Chansonniers like Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel and singer / songwriter heroes like Cave, Cash and Cohen are obvious influences. This is the darker side of singer / songwriter tradition: post-industrial-folk with elements of Electro-Pop, complex arrangements of breathtaking melodies, mesmerising ballads of lyrical beauty, underlining Rome's ethos of never faltering or remaining uninvolved. Features four songs, among which the exclusive and intimate track "One Flesh", along with reinvented, "stringed" versions of two classic tracks "Der Erscheinungen Flucht' and 'Der Brandtaucher' (from "Masse Mensch Material"). SUNSET WINGS - 'Covering For Solace' CD (Wrotycz)
The debut album of a Königsberg band Sunset Wings is a wide opened window to the world of Neofolk music. Inspired by pearls of English romantic poetry together with traditional ballads of the British isles and the art of Pre-Raphaelites, this album takes you to a marvelous journey in the land of childhood dreams, sweet sorrow and melancholy. Despite the sorrow of lyrics the music of this album more often than not is rather bright and filled with sweet nostalgic melancholy. With it's particular sound and temperament, Sunset Wings takes it's place among famous Russian dark-folk bands, such as Neutral and Romowe Rikoito. Ltd x 1000 copies in a digipak including booklet with all lyrics.
SVARTSINN - 'Devouring Consciousness' CD (Eibon Records)
Debut album from this Norwegian Dark Ambient legend. Imagine a crossing between Amon and Lustmord, enriched with some dreadful melodies here and there. TERVAHÄÄT - 'Tervahäät' CD (Anima Arctica)
Melancholic / gloomy Finnish ambient with folk textures. "Tervahäät is a mixture completely of its own: there are elements of progressive rock, black and stoner metal, dark folk, ritual dark ambient as well as drone. Yet it is none of these. Often I think this is a combination of the sluggish tempo of Earth meeting the wintry sound of Burzum... The end result almost makes me taste the humid wood of a forgotten cabin in the woods, hear the ghostly humming of the trees and feel the cold wind carrying spirits of the dead through the wall springs. Tervahäät is a very successful and original mixture, which should find friends among fans of both dark ambient and gloomy metal. For a debut album it is amazingly mature and whole" (KMY). Ltd x 500 copies.
2nd edition of this crucial 1995 artifact from Total, another killer project from Matthew Bower (Skullflower, Hototogisu, Sunroof!). This full length sports four looong tracks of sky rupturing freeform guitar noise and chunky ear-shredding amp feedback that swirl together into thick, churning, blackened drones, dreamy hums and harsh noise storms. This definitely ranks among Bower's more brutal jams, with much of the album sounding like a gang of massively distorted electric guitars battling mutant vacuum cleaners in a brutal, cathartic mass of crushing jet-engine roar. Awesome seminal guitar / feedback noise that shakes buildings. Features Philip Best (Whitehouse) on violin for one track. On the RRR Pure imprint with cut & paste artwork in a PVC sleeve.

VA - 'Epitaph For John' CD (Korm Plastics)
Compilation with Asmus Tietchens, RLW (Ralf Wehowsky), Merzbow, Freiband (Frans De Waard) and John Watermann. "On April 2nd 2002 John Watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. Having in the final year of his life returned to artistic pursuits, he still had vast plans for future projects. Among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with Frans de Waard on a new release. Although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and Watermann never completed any work towards the project, Watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release. This release serves as a record of Watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience." WHERE - 'Wererat' CD (Eibon Records)
7 years after their acclaimed debut 'The Creatures Of The Wind', Where (Zario of organic ambient project Olhon and Darvulia) return with 'Wererat'. YAHOWHA 13 - 'I'm Gonna Take You Home' CD (Swordfish)
By 1974 psychedelia's first wave may have been on the wane, but in the garage at the Source Family's commune in California, they could not have cared less. Another amazing long-player from Father Yod's vaults, "I'm Gonna Take You Home", finds his house band, the Ya Ho Wha 13, in splendidly miasmic form improvising their way through deeply lysergic side trips that merit comparison with anything in the Can or Amon Duul catalogues. With artwork that depicts the Zeus-bearded Father Yod posing as various Tarot card icons with naked lovers, the album works both as an outrageously Aquarian time capsule and as enduring and unfettered guitar psych. Father Yod yelps and whistles sensual come-ons in what must have been his cult's answer to baby-making slow jams.
