Released on Vollmer’s own label, this is a release with very little information and minimal artwork. Total relentless lo-fi noise over two tracks. Incomprehensible, dense and murderous screeching amongst thick layers of electronics and violence make this quite a difficult and claustrophobic release! A small note: both sides have the same track name, but are in fact different.

CHRIS CONNELLY AND THE BELLS - 'Blonde Exodus / The Ultimate Seaside Companion' 2 x CD (Dream Catcher)
"Blonde Exodus is a huge step forward from Connelly's last solo album, the plodding Ultimate Seaside Companion. Here his sound is more fully realized and less self-consciously artistic there are still layers of strings and acoustic guitars, but the mix is leavened by muscular beats, and the derivative nature of his singing (think Nick Cave crossed with David Bowie) is less distracting in the context of these more interesting arrangements. After a bizarre spoken word throwaway ("Generique"), the album gets off to a rousing start with the bruising but pretty "London Fields." "Diamonds Eat Diamonds" is lyrically lumpy, shot through with indigestible lines like "I saw your precious mania diving for pearls/And swan dive like Icarus into the underworld," but "Twilight Shiner," with its chiming guitar and hummable chorus, hits the spot nicely. So far, Connelly has made his best music as a member of the Damage Manual, and some will remember his 1980s work with Ministry with twisted fondness. But this album makes a case for him as a solo artist worth watching". (AMG)

Asmus Tietchens sent processed recordings of himself reading excerpts from two texts by E. M. Cioran. Duncan worked on and manipulated them, creating three pieces. There is little of Tietchens remaining in these abstract creations. Speed-altered voice tracks are stacked, swirling electronic sounds in the background providing proof of deeper processing. "Freih zein hoem macht..." ranks among Duncan's harshest pieces to date, while "Aber..." is more "typical" Duncan: a drone derived from the sound source but from which the sound source has been obliterated, and yet makes its ghostly presence palpable. MATT SHOEMAKER - 'Tropical Amnesia One' CD (Ferns Recordings)
"More field recordings here, this time around taken from the Amazonas, Brazil, to precise the Mamori Lake. Shoemaker taped the sounds there and treats the whole thing into one piece of music that lasts 64 minutes. If I was to imagine how the Amazonian rainforest would sound like, I think it would sound like this. A fairly thick mass of busy buzzing insect sounds, birds and wind like sounds. Shoemaker opts for a dramatic approach in this work: things start out relatively quiet and moody, but over the course of those 60 some minutes grows with some violent intention. Shoemaker uses strong equalisation, adding low end sounds to the piece, that makes the earth tremble among the heavy weight of this piece. Yet he never loses the clarity of the sounds, birds and insects are always to be recognised here. An excellent piece along the lines of the best of Francisco Lopez (who organises the annual Mamori Sound Project. Shoemaker delivers a great work, perhaps his best so far" (Vital Weekly). "Masami Akita in collaboration with some chickens. Given his penchant for animal kingdom-themed releases in recent years, that actually makes some sort of sense. Another theme in recent Merzbow releases has been the reappearance of analogue electronics, and true to form, Higanbana finds Akita using EMS synth alongside his laptop. It's hard to tell exactly what's making the noise at any given time here, but the intensity is often pretty overwhelming. Mathias Josefsons one-man-project Moljebka Pvlse from Stockholm, Sweden here stretches the boundaries of ambient drone-music, perhaps a surprising listen for those accustomed to his other recordings put out by Eibon and Cold Meat Industry to name a few. This work to a larger degree features a sound pallette unarguably harsher than his other recordings. Tons of frenzied, computerised, but crispy clear distortion flows out over you like an ice wall and leaves the listener in a nervous state, begging for a warming aftermath. Static walls of rampant treated guitars and billowing droney backgrounds screaming endlessly out over the cold plains of the earth. A commemoration of one of the most tragic pages of Russian history in the 20th century - the Russo-Japanese War. This lost war became a deep scar in the national consciousness of that period and turned out to be among the most painful and powerful incentives for the following first Russian revolution (1905) and the further eventual decline of the Russian monarchy. This CD is an attempt to revive the deep anxiety and the premonition of the upcoming relentless social shock which had overwhelmed the Russian nation in those times. Stalnoy Pakt presents maybe its most melodic tracks to date here, the distinctive band's multi-layered dark ambient fused with old military Japanese song samples and old Russian lyrical narrations, sometimes adorned with piano chords or martial drums. Anthesteria's cold gloomy tunes are combined with choir chants and gramophone record samples that aggravate the atmosphere of the dull waiting for the imminent disaster. The album is concluded with an authentic historical recording of the classic track of the period called "Na Sopkakh Manchzhurii" performed by a very famous singer of that time, Mikhail Vavich. Compilation with Asmus Tietchens, RLW (Ralf Wehowsky), Merzbow, Freiband (Frans De Waard) and John Watermann. "On April 2nd 2002 John Watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. Having in the final year of his life returned to artistic pursuits, he still had vast plans for future projects. Among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with Frans de Waard on a new release. Although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and Watermann never completed any work towards the project, Watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.
