One can say many things about Ain Soph, but one thing is certain; they know how to incorporate different styles of music to their best advantage. For the most part, this release comes across as a ritual for the first free tracks at least. Which on the original vinyl release found closure with 'IAO', then takes a more aggressive tone on the title track 'Kshatriya', which is more a battle cry than an actual song, a post-industrial piece that is discordant as well as melodic. Not short on the esoteric this release finds Ain Soph on the cusp of re-invention, for in the early nineties their sound took a slightly different turn that can be described as folk rock, but we will always have this little gem to remember them" (Heathen Harvest). "These songs were composed during the last days of the Bush / Blair era and reflect the feeling of isolation and disconnection from any part of the political process and any sense of identification with the prevailing air of hostility and intolerance generated by this pair of religious xenophobes. The unjustified war in Iraq and the subsequent lies and propaganda engendered a feeling of revulsion and powerlessness. Once again it was “unpatriotic” to criticize or protest against the government’s actions, and there was a rise in nationalism and extrem- ist views. These songs are a retreat into the one place that no government has yet found a way into, the free and open spaces of the mind. They are spontaneous and mediative reflections looking for an inner peace in a world made ugly by hatred and war. They symbolize a kind of “walkabout” and a reconnection with a lost sense of belonging spiritually, intellectually and physically with the world we inhabit. In a broader sense they also re-affirm long held sympathies with the thoughts of writers and philosophers such as Camus, Sartre and Burroughs, and the profound wisdom of eastern philosophies such as Taoism and Zen. "Vorweltschweigen" is completely based on the lyrics and sounds of Sturmpercht, the legendary creators of Alpine Folk music. Rauhnacht is pure Alpine Black Metal, based on the atmosphere of early Norwegian Black Metal, but dealing with Alpine and Celtic mythology, philosophy and tradition. ABM contains a large variety of (ancient) traditional acoustic instruments from Alpine/Celtic areas, such as the Alphorn, the Teufelsgeige, hunter's trumpets and other obscure Alpine instruments, as well as organic/natural field-recordings from black forests, craggy mountains and dark caves.
