Agalloch AGALLOCH - 'Ashes Against The Grain' CD (Grau)

Four years after their acclaimed album 'The Mantle', Agalloch delivers their new album, 'Ashes Against The Grain'. Always progressing but never losing touch with their dark metal roots, the band's third album unites elements of black metal, Scandinavian prog, and post-rock with the band's signature brooding style. "Agalloch is the most important band in the United States and simply one of the best bands in the world." (The Metal Observer).

Agalloch AGALLOCH - 'Pale Folklore' CD (The End Records)

"Pale Folklore" features eight tracks (62mins) of Black Metal / Doom from this Portland act. Very elaborate and diverse, and surrounded by the majesty of nature and the burden of human existence, the album bursts with melodies with a basis of dark yet very emotional concepts. Creating auras of dark, symphonic melancholia, "Pale Folklore" turns out to be one of the most tragic, mournful yet expressive listening experiences ever!

Oak Folk / Arnica, Dannagoischd, Frakmundt VA - 'Oak Folk' CD (Ahnstern / Steinklang)

Oak Folk is a CD anthology compiled by Gerhard Hallstatt (Allerseelen) with exclusive contributions by numerous European and North American groups who have one thing in common: a close connection to nature, to trees and woods. All the groups were invited to write a song about the sacred oaktree. The result is a wonderful compilation with songs with an atmosphere somewhere between Dark Ambient, Folklore and sometimes even a slight Black Metal touch. Features: Agalloch, Allerseelen, Àrnica, Changes, Dânnâgôischd, Fräkmündt, Hrefnesholt, Klammheim, Splinterskin, Sturmpercht, Waldteufel and Werra. 6-panel digipak. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Velnias / VinylLP VELNIAS - 'Sovereign Noctural' LP (Vendetta Records)

Reissue of Velnias' 2008 album. The music of Illinois based blackened doom outfit Velnias can be best described as a combination of sorrowful black metal with a very doomy atmosphere, combined with elements of folk. With three lengthy songs, the emphasis has been laid upon a musical foundation of progressive yet feral riffs, intertwining with delicate passages that only make the heavier parts that much more potent. Combined with lyrical content based upon the premise that the human race is insignificant compared to the grand power and prestige of nature this is a debut album that should not be dismissed! File next to Opeth, Agalloch or Wolves In The Throne Room. Ltd x 400 copies on black vinyl.

Wolf & Winter WOLF & WINTER - 'When The Cold Earth Rests In Silence' CD (Twilight Records)

Wolf & Winter's second album is still in the vein of their first album's raw black metal, but moves a step forward into depressive black metal, combining ambient strings and bombastic drums from the first pagan metal and using a grimmer repertoire of black metal vocals. Not quite post black metal, it uses some elements of this genre to combine the first age of Bathory and Hellhammer with Ulver, Burzum and even Agalloch. To stand in the roots of primitive and raw music is why this second album does not completely move forward into a more modern concept of black metal, but this doesn't mean it's stuck in the past. This way, the music gains more solidness and independence in a genre which has been so done, so constructed, so reconstructed and at last, so repeated. Digipak.
